1 John 1:xx - Who wrote 1 John? The apostle John. 1 John 1:1 - What does John proclaim concerning the Word of life? That which was from the beginning, which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes, which we have looked at and our hands have touched. 1 John 1:2 - What appeared that John saw and testified to, and which was with the Father and has appeared to us? The life. 1 John 1:2 - John proclaims to us the eternal life which was what? With the Father and has appeared to us. 1 John 1:3 - Why does John say he proclaims to us what he has seen and heard? So that we also may have fellowship with Him. 1 John 1:3 - Who is our fellowship with? The Father and his son, Jesus Christ. 1 John 1:4 - What was the purpose of John's writing in 1 John? To make our joy complete. 1 John 1:5 - What is the message John had heard from God and was proclaiming to us? God is light; in Him there is no darkness at all. 1 John 1:6 - What are we doing by claiming to have fellowship with Him while still walking in the darkness? We lie and are not living by the truth. 1 John 1:7 - We should walk in the light just as what? As God is in the light. 1 John 1:7 - What do we receive by walking in the light, as he is in the light? We have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus purifies us from all sin. 1 John 1:8 - By claiming to what, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us? By claiming that we are without sin. 1 John 1:9 - By what action can we be forgiven of our sins? Confessing. 1 John 1:9 - If we confess our sins, what will happen? God is faithful and just, and will forgive us and purify us from all unrighteousness. 1 John 1:10 - What do we do by claiming to be without sin? We make Him out to be a liar and His word has no place in our lives. 1 John 2:1 - Why does John tell his "dear children" that he writes this message to them? So that they will not sin. 1 John 2:1 - If we sin, who comes to our defense? Jesus Christ, the Righteous One, speaks to the Father in our defense. 1 John 2:1 - Jesus Christ can speak in our defense to the Father if we have done what? Sinned. 1 John 2:2 - What is Jesus' sacrifice and atonement for? For our sins and for the sins of the whole world. 1 John 2:3 - How do we come to know God? By obeying His commandments. 1 John 2:4 - By claiming to know God and not following His commandments, you are what? A liar, and the truth is not in you. 1 John 2:5 - If anyone obeys God's commands, what do we know from this? We are in Him, and God's love is truly made complete in us. 1 John 2:6 - We must walk as Jesus did if we claim what? To live in him. 1 John 2:6 - If we claim to live in him, we must do what? Walk as Jesus did. 1 John 2:7 - Is John writing us a new commandment or an old one? An old one, which we had since the beginning. 1 John 2:8 - What about Johns "new" command is seen in Him and us? The truth. 1 John 2:8 - What is passing while the true light is shining? The darkness. 1 John 2:9 - What can we not do and still claim to be in the light? Hate our brother. 1 John 2:9 - If we hate our brother, where are we? Still in the darkness. 1 John 2:10 - What allows us to stay in the light and keeps us from stumbling? Loving our brothers. 1 John 2:11 - By hating our brothers, what has blinded us as we walk? The darkness. 1 John 2:12-13 - Why is John writing to us, as his dear children? To tell us our sins have been forgiven and because we have known the Father. 1 John 2:13 - What three groups does John address in explaining why he is writing? Fathers, young men, and his "dear children". 1 John 2:13-14 - Why does John say he is writing to the fathers? Because they have known Him who is from the beginning. 1 John 2:13-14 - Why does John say he is writing to the young men? Because they have overcome the evil one, and because they are strong and the word of God lives in them. 1 John 2:14 - Why does John write to the young men? Because they are strong, the Word lives in them, and they have overcome the evil one. 1 John 2:15 - What does John tell us not to love? The world or anything in it. 1 John 2:15 - If we love the world, what is true? The love of the Father is not in us. 1 John 2:16 - Everything of the world does not come from God, but comes from what? The world. 1 John 2:16 - What 3 examples does John give of things that come from the world? The cravings on sinful men, the lust of his eyes and the boasting of what he has and does. 1 John 2:17 - John says, the world and its desires pass away, but what happens to the man who does the will of God? He lives forever. 1 John 2:18 - When will we know it is the last hour? Many antichrists will come. 1 John 2:19 - The antichrists John describes came from where? From among the church. 1 John 2:19 - John says that even though many antichrists have gone out from among us, what is true about them? They did not really belong to us. 1 John 2:19 - John says that if the antichrists had really belonged to us, what would have happened? They would have remained with us. 1 John 2:20 - We are not like the antichrists because we have what? We have an anointing from the Holy One and all of us know the truth. 1 John 2:21 - What cannot come from the truth? A lie. 1 John 2:21 - What does John say about the truth and why he is writing to us? He is writing to us because we do know the truth. 1 John 2:22 - Who is the man who denies Jesus is the Christ? The antichrist - he denies the Father and the Son. 1 John 2:22 - Who is the liar? He who denies that Jesus is the Christ. 1 John 2:23 - Who has the Father? Whoever acknowledges the Son. 1 John 2:23 - No one who denies the Son has what? The Father. 1 John 2:24 - We must see that what we have heard from the beginning remains in us so that we may remain in who? The Son and the Father. 1 John 2:25 - What is promised to us? Eternal life. 1 John 2:26 - Who is John writing to warn us of? Those who are trying to lead us astray. 1 John 2:27 - What has the anointing we received from God taught us? It has taught us about all things, that His anointing is real and that we should remain in Him. 1 John 2:28 - Why must we continue in Him? To be confident and unashamed before Him at His coming. 1 John 2:29 - Anyone who does what is right, is born of who? God. 1 John 2:29 - If we know that He is righteous, what should we know? That everyone who does what is right has been born of Him. 1 John 3:1 - John praises God's love because of what? Because we can now be called sons of God!. 1 John 3:1 - Why doesn't the world know us? Because the world did not know God, and we are sons of God. 1 John 3:2 - Why will we be like Him when He appears? We shall see Him as He is. 1 John 3:3 - Everyone who has hope in God does what for himself? Purifies himself, just as God is pure. 1 John 3:4 - Everyone who sins does what? Breaks the law. 1 John 3:4 - What is sin? Lawlessness. 1 John 3:5 - Why did Jesus appear? To take away our sins. 1 John 3:5 - In Jesus there is no what? Sin. 1 John 3:6 - If we live in Jesus, we cannot keep doing what? Sinning. 1 John 3:6 - What is true about the one who continues to sin? They have neither seen or known God. 1 John 3:7 - John tells us not to let anyone do what? Lead us astray. 1 John 3:7 - He who does what is right is what? Righteous, just as God is righteous. 1 John 3:8 - He who does what is sinful is what? Of the devil. 1 John 3:8 - What is true about the devil with respect to sin? He has been sinning since the beginning. 1 John 3:8 - Why did the son of God appear? To destroy the devil's work. 1 John 3:9 - Why will no one born of God continue to sin? Because God's seed remains in him. 1 John 3:9 - Why can we not go on sinning? Because we have been born of God. 1 John 3:10 - Who is not a child of God? Anyone who does not love his brother or does not do what is right. 1 John 3:11 - What is the message we have heard from the beginning? We should love each other. 1 John 3:12 - Who should we not be like? Cain. 1 John 3:12 - Who did Cain belong to? The evil one. 1 John 3:12 - Why did Cain murder his brother? Because his own actions were evil and his brother's were righteous. 1 John 3:13 - What should we not be surprised about? The world hating us. 1 John 3:14 - How do we know that we have passed from death to life? Because we love our brothers. 1 John 3:14 - Anyone who does not love remains where? In death. 1 John 3:15 - What is anyone who hates his brother? A murderer. 1 John 3:15 - We know what about murderers? No murderer has eternal life in him. 1 John 3:16 - How do we know what love is? Jesus laid down his life for us and we ought to lay down ours for our brothers. 1 John 3:17 - What example does John give when he says "how can the love of God be in him"? The man who has material possessions and sees his brother in need but has no pity on him. 1 John 3:18 - What should we love with? Not with word or tongue but with actions and in truth. 1 John 3:19 - How do we know we belong to the truth? By loving with actions and in truth. 1 John 3:19 - How do we set our hearts at rest in God's presence? By loving with actions and in truth. 1 John 3:20 - What is God said to be greater than? Our hearts. 1 John 3:21 - What do we have if our hearts do not condemn us? Confidence before God. 1 John 3:22 - Why do we receive anything we want from Him? Because we obey His commandments and do what pleases Him. 1 John 3:23 - What commandments are given in 1 John 3:23? To believe in the name of His son Jesus Christ, and to love one another as He commanded us. 1 John 3:24 - Those who obey God's commands do what? Live in Him and He in us. 1 John 3:24 - How do we know He lives in us? By the Spirit He gave us. 1 John 4:1 - We should test the spirits and not do what? Do not believe every evil spirit. 1 John 4:1 - Why does John tell us to test the spirits? Because many false prophets have gone out into the world. 1 John 4:2 - How can we recognize the Spirit of God? Every spirit that acknowledges that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is from God. 1 John 4:3 - What spirit is it that does not acknowledge Jesus Christ? The spirit of the antichrist. 1 John 4:3 - What does John say is true of the spirit of the antichrist? It is even now already in the world. 1 John 4:4 - Who is greater than the one who is in the world? The one who is in us. 1 John 4:4 - We have overcome as God's children because of what? The Spirit of the one who is in us is greater than the one who is in the world. 1 John 4:5 - Who speaks from the viewpoint of the world? Those who are from the world. 1 John 4:6 - How do we recognize the spirit of truth and the spirit of falsehood? Whoever knows God listens to us, whoever is not from God does not listen to us. 1 John 4:7 - What is true about every one of us who loves? We have been born of God and know God. 1 John 4:7 - Where does love come from? God. 1 John 4:7 - Because love comes from God, we should do what? Love one another. 1 John 4:8 - The one who doesn't love, does not know who? God. 1 John 4:9 - How did God show his love among us? He sent His one and only son into the world that we might live through Him. 1 John 4:10 - God sent His Son for what purpose? As an atoning sacrifice for our sins. 1 John 4:11 - Why should we love each other? Because God loves us. 1 John 4:12 - What must we do for God to live in us? Love one another. 1 John 4:13 - How do we know He lives in us? Because He has given us His Spirit. 1 John 4:14 - Who can we testify that the Father sent down to be Savior of the world? His Son. 1 John 4:15 - What must we do in order for God to live in us? Acknowledge that Jesus is the Son of God. 1 John 4:16 - What can we know and rely on? The love God has for us. 1 John 4:16 - Whoever lives in love does what? Lives in God, and God in him. 1 John 4:17 - Love is made complete among us for what reason? It gives us confidence on the day of judgement. 1 John 4:17 - Why does our love give us confidence in the day of judgement? Because in this world we are like Him. 1 John 4:18 - What is not present in love? Fear. 1 John 4:18 - Perfect love does what? Drives out fear. 1 John 4:18 - Who is not made perfect in love? The one who fears. 1 John 4:18 - Why does perfect love drive out fear? Because fear has to do with punishment. 1 John 4:19 - Why do we love? Because He first loved us. 1 John 4:20 - Who is he who says "I love God" yet hates his brother? A liar. 1 John 4:20 - Why is he who says "I love God" yet hates his brother a liar? Anyone who does not love his brother whom he has seen, cannot love God, whom he has not seen. 1 John 4:21 - Who must he who loves God also love? His brother. 1 John 5:1 - What can we say about those who believe Jesus is the Christ? They are born of God. 1 John 5:1 - Everyone who loves the father loves who? The child as well. 1 John 5:2 - How do we know that we love the children of God? By loving God and carrying out His commandments. 1 John 5:3 - What is love for God? Obeying His commands. 1 John 5:3 - God's commands are not what? Burdensome. 1 John 5:4 - What is our faith? The victory that has overcome the world. 1 John 5:4 - What does everyone born of God overcome? The world. 1 John 5:5 - Who is it that overcomes the world? Only he who believes that Jesus is the Son of God. 1 John 5:6 - How did Jesus come to us? By water and blood. 1 John 5:6 - Why does the spirit testify? Because it is the truth. 1 John 5:7 - How many are there that testify? Three. 1 John 5:8 - Who are the three that testify? The spirit, the water and the blood. 1 John 5:8 - What is true about the three that testify? They are in agreement. 1 John 5:9 - Whose testimony is greater than man's testimony? God's. 1 John 5:9 - Why is God's testimony greater than man's? Because it is the testimony God has given about His son. 1 John 5:10 - Who has this testimony in his heart? He who believes in the Son of God. 1 John 5:10 - Why do those who don't believe God make Him out to be a liar? Because he has not believed the testimony God has given about His Son. 1 John 5:11 - What is the testimony? God has given us eternal life, and this life is in His Son. 1 John 5:12 - He who has the Son has what? Life. 1 John 5:12 - He who does not have the Son has what? He does not have life. 1 John 5:13 - Why does John write all these things to those who believe in the name of the Son of God? So that they may know that they have eternal life. 1 John 5:14 - What is the confidence we have in approaching God? That if we ask anything according to His will, He hears us. 1 John 5:15 - If we know that He hears us, what also do we know? That we have what we asked of Him. 1 John 5:16 - What should we do if we see a brother commit a sin that does not lead to death? We should pray and God will give him life. 1 John 5:16 - What does John not say we should pray about? The sin that leads to death. 1 John 5:17 - What is all wrongdoing? Sin. 1 John 5:17 - Not all sin leads to what? Death. 1 John 5:18 - Anyone born of God does not do what? Continue to sin. 1 John 5:18 - Anyone born of God does not continue to sin because of what? God keeps him safe, and the evil one cannot harm him. 1 John 5:19 - We know what about ourselves? We are the children of God. 1 John 5:19 - Who controls the world? The evil one. 1 John 5:20 - What has the Son of God given us? Understanding, so that we may know Him who is true. 1 John 5:20 - How does John describe God? He who is the true God and eternal life. 1 John 5:21 - What does John warn us about at the close of 1 John? To keep ourselves from idols.
